Derek Jeter named SI Sportsman of the Year

New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter was named Sportsman of the Year by Sports Illustrated on Monday. Jeter is the first Yankee player (14 other MLB players like Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa have won, but never as part of the Yankees) among the sports magazine’s annual honorees. The next issue of Sports Illustrated will feature cover art of Derek Jeter leaning against the 161st Street Yankee Stadium subway stop, a photo that was taken after they won the World Series.

The shortstop was an integral part to the New York Yankees recent 27th World Series championship, Jeter batted a.334 average during the regular season and then upped that to .407 during the playoffs.

Besides winning the World Series, Jeter also won the Hank Aaron Award (awarded to the best hitter in each league), Roberto Clemente Award (players whom succeeds on the field and off of it with community involvement), named to the AL All-Star team, Silver Slugger Award, Rawlings Gold Glove Award and the Sportsman of the Year for 2009.

All of these awards help round out a Banner year for the Yankee player, especially when you consider he also broke several records, and reached many career milestones. He led the American League by getting on base 289 times, finished second in hits with 212, third in batting average and on-base percentage (.406), fourth in runs (107) and eighth in stolen bases (30). He also passed Lou Gehrig’s franchise mark for base hits, which now stands at 2,747 in Jeter’s 15 seasons.

Congratulations to Derek Jeter on his successful 2009 season with the Yankees.
