About New York
The City of New York is thought to be the largest and most densely populated city in the United States. The city is situated on the Northeastern United States, adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean. It is made up of five boroughs namely Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, Staten Island and Manhattan. The city spans a distance of 790km2 with the total metropolitan area being 17,400km2.
Founded in 1624, it began as a commercial trading point in the name of New Amsterdam. It also acted as the capital city of USA between 1785 and 1790. It operates in a 24-hour cycle with mass transit systems, and it is inhibited with people from all over the world. It was stated in 2005 that there were up to 170 languages being spoken in New York and up to 36% of its population constituted of persons born outside the USA.
The city is well known to the world as a world class tourist destination. Up to 47 millions people visit New York each year. Among its major attractions are its beautiful skyscrapers, zoos, museums, luxurious shopping malls and social events. The Empire State Building, Central Park, Times Square and the statue of liberty are a few of the major attractions.
New York has various cultures which stated and spread across the country. From jazz to abstract expressionism, hip hop to rock, art seems to be the order of the day for the New Yorkers. Their food is greatly influenced by the inhabitants of the city. Among the well known cuisines originate from Italy and East Europe. The Middle East also has a big share in food vending in the city streets. The popular foods include cheesecake, kebabs, bagels, falafels and the famous New York-style pizza. There are fine restaurants which prepare world class haute cuisines.
In business, this city ranks top with the London and Tokyo. It has some of the biggest financial corporations, insurance and real estate agents. Midtown Manhattan is the busiest central business district, followed closely by Lower Manhattan. The city is home to Wall Street, which hosts New York Stork Exchange and NASDAQ, the world’s leading stock exchanges. Real estate takes the lead in investment with a tune of $802 billion worth of property in the year 2006.
Sporting is one of most adored practices here. Baseball and basketball are the leaders with American Football and other sports following closely. The New York Yankees and New York Mets are big teams in the Major League Baseball while New York Knicks are a cut above the rest in NBA Basketball. The city has its own distinctive accent and it also boosts for its low crime rate compared to 25 large cities in USA.
